All-Abilities April Club Spotlight: Wangaratta City FC

Throughout All-Abilities April we look forward to sharing the stories of clubs and experiences of participants in different programs.

Wangaratta City FC may have only spent one season in Football Victoria’s (FV) All-Abilities League; however, the regional Club has spent over 10 years helping integrate All-Abilities (AA) participants into mainstream football.

Club president, Kristy Mellor explained the catalyst for the move was to provide their players with more competition.

“It was a massive difference, just playing competitively brings out another side to them,” she said.

“I think they were more motivated to come to training and just the skill development throughout the year was quite remarkable.

“The social part was massive for them as well; they made new friends and there was plenty of banter before games; it was a different feel for us being a part of the league.”

The Club's AA program, initiated by member and teacher Jack McNeil from Wangaratta District Specialist School, has seen remarkable progress and inclusivity. Mellor expressed hope for more clubs to adopt AA programs but stressed the importance of having the right mindset and support system in place.

“It has really all come through him, it is kind of like his legacy,” Mellor explained.

“We still have a strong relationship with the specialist school and look to help out each other where we can.

“One of the All-Abilities boys who have come through our, MiniRoos has made the U13 boys team this year, we are really proud of that.”

Mellor was hopeful more Clubs across Victoria would implement an AA program, however, was adamant the right people needed to be in place.

“It is very rewarding when you see how much they can improve with just a little bit of support and how much they can benefit the Club,” she said.

“I think you need someone who has quite an open mind and I think that is the most important thing.

“As long as you treat everyone with respect, try to include everyone, and give everyone equal playing time the players will understand.”

Wangaratta City’s AA team has already been back training for the season ahead but doesn’t officially start until Wednesday nights in Term 2.

“I have always had an interest in helping people play football or play sport, just breaking down barriers to help them do that,” Mellor explained.

“Our Club welcomes anybody of any skill level, as it reflects our values of equal opportunity for everyone and respect.”
