FV South West History

FV South West History

Like much of Victoria, football in the Warrnambool region boomed after the second world war, with teams forming in the city as well as Port Fairy, Colac and Hamilton in the 1950s. While the Western District League and Cup competitions appeared to thrive for almost a decade, they just as curiously disappeared without a trace, and it would not be until the turn of the century that junior participation in the region would kickstart a push to form organised football once more.

The Warrnambool and District Soccer League (WDSL) thus began in 2009. With a strong foundation of junior members the league expanded to include teams from Stawell, Portland and Port Fairy, and by 2020 it was known as the South West Victorian Football Association.

A new era beckons in 2026 as FV South West transforms a region now sporting seven clubs and teams ranging from Senior Mens and Womens down to MiniRoos.

Competition Honour Roll

At present, Football Victoria is researching the history of football in regional Victoria, with particular emphasis on identifying the origins of each competition, with a view to composing an exhaustive list of League and Cup winners, to be shared early in 2026.
