WHAT IS WALKING FOOTBALL?

Walking Football is a small-sided, low-impact, modified version of the game, suitable for all levels of ability and fitness, from people who are returning to sport after a break or those who have never played before. Walking Football aims to provide participants physical & mental health benefits, social contentedness and promotion of the benefits of ongoing physical activity.

The program will highlight the health, well-being and social benefits of regular football and offer exercise activities for older people. Football Victoria’s Walking Football program caters for individuals of all ages, with a focus on men and women aged over 55 years.

WALKING FOOTBALL TESTIMONIAL

Being part of a Football Victoria affiliated Hub has helped us connect with the wider Walking Football community, with great support through grants, training, and coaching resources. As a bonus, I won tickets to a Matildas match at Marvel Stadium through Football Victoria, an unforgettable first-time experience.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is Walking Football?

Walking Football is a small-sided, low-impact version of football (soccer) where players walk instead of run. It’s designed to be inclusive, social, and suitable for people of all abilities and fitness levels.

Who can play Walking Football?

Anyone can join! Walking Football is especially popular with older adults, people returning to sport after a break, and those looking for a fun, social way to stay active. No prior football experience is required.

Do I need to be fit to play?

Not at all. Walking Football is designed to be gentle on the body and is mostly played at your own pace. It’s about participation and enjoyment rather than fitness or competition. However, there is the opportunity to progress to competitive play at your own pace.

What are the main rules?

The key rules include:

  • No running (walking only).
  • No tackling (non-contact game).
  • The ball must stay below ‘hip’ height.

Small-sided teams and smaller pitches for easier play.

What should I wear and bring?
  • Comfortable clothing: Wear clothing that is most comfortable to wear whilst moving around.
  • If playing indoors: Runners or futsal shoes are recommended
  • If playing outside: Runners or football boots are best
  • Bring: Water bottle, and if you wish, shin guards for extra protection.
Do I need to register before attending?

Yes, we recommend registering your interest online via the EOI (Walking Football Participant EOI ) and Football Victoria will direct you to a Hub closest to you. Most Hubs also allow walk-ins, depending on numbers.

Is there a cost to play?

Most Walking Football Hubs charge a small fee per session to cover venue hire and equipment. Costs vary depending on the Hub.

How long are the sessions?

Sessions usually run for around 60–90 minutes, including warm-up, games, and a cool-down. Many Hubs also include time for a social coffee or chat afterwards.

Where are Walking Football Hubs located in Victoria?

Walking Football Hubs operate across metropolitan and regional Victoria. Locations can be found on the Football Victoria website here: WALKING FOOTBALL | Football Victoria.

Can I come by myself?

Absolutely! Walking Football is very welcoming to individuals, and you’ll quickly meet new people. Many participants come on their own and leave with new friends.

What if I haven’t played football before?

No problem! Walking Football is easy to pick up, and sessions are beginner-friendly. Coaches and facilitators are there to support you.

Is it competitive?

Walking Football is more about fun, inclusion, and social connection than competition. While there are structured games, the focus is on enjoyment and participation. However – if you wish as you progress, there are opportunities to play more competitively.

Can I just try one session before committing?

Yes, most Hubs welcome first-time participants to try a session before deciding whether to join regularly.
