Football Victoria (FV) is delighted to announce the recipients of the 2022 Football Victoria Community Awards . Congratulations to all of this year’s winners!
The response from the football community was tremendous following the call for nominations in late September.
FV would also like to thank and acknowledge all of the nominees in addition to all of the other volunteers, administrators, Clubs, coaches, referees and people in our community who contribute making our game so special.
Metropolitan Club of the Year: Preston Lions FC
The Preston Lions FC was established in 1947 by immigrants and is a proud community club.
The club prides itself on a strong junior pathway and in 2022 had over 350 participants across Lions Cubs, Miniroos and Juniors.
This year, Preston enjoyed a 30% rise in female participation and had an astonishing 40 different backgrounds and nationalities showcasing how much the club engages with its diverse community.
Regional Club of the Year: Wodonga Heart FC
Wodonga Heart is the largest multicultural club in the AWFA competition and prides themselves on inclusion, player development and ensuring all players are supported.
The strong stance on culture has been integral in making the heart family so strong and a desired destination for families in the community.
The cultural and family dynamic and WHFC means that players are not limited by their background financial status or playing ability.
Community Coach of the Year (Female): Madelaine Breakspear
Madelaine’s lives and breathes football with her love for football is evident to see.
The Sale United Football coach has created a welcoming and encouraging environment at training, which has seen over 30 girls register.
Her passion for football is contagious and the way she plays the game instils a determination in the players around her.
Madelaine’s commitment to coaching is unwavering as she coaches, trains and plays five days per week while being a mother of two young children.
She is a catalyst to ensuring female development continues to grow and football has a sustainable future in the region.
Community Coach of the Year (Male): Con Lekakis
Con is a physical education teacher at Braybook Secondary College who tirelessly gives up his time to bring people together through football.
He has made a huge impact on the youth in his region by using football as a vehicle to enhance the lives of students and the wider community.
His energy, passion and love for the game is admired by many in his community.
VRGF – Female Volunteer of the Year: Rose Martin
Rose is the glue that keeps Wodonga Heart Football Club together since arriving along with her twin boys in 2018.
In her short time at the club she has held endless positions at the club from committee member to canteen coordinator.
The current secretary of the club is a very welcoming and friendly person who is helping build a bigger and better future Wodonga Heart.
VRGF – Male Volunteer of the Year: Cameron Irvine
Cameron has been the backbone of the Sale United FC for the past seven years, making sure the club’s facilities are at an optimum standard.
He is always thinking of new and exciting ways of how to improve the club, it’s programs and how to optimise how accessible football is for everyone.
Through his commitment, dedication and hard work, Sale United FC is one of the most successful clubs in the region and enjoys growing numbers every year.
Partner Organisation of the Year: Melbourne Chinese Soccer Association
The Melbourne Chinese Soccer Association is born out of inclusion, with over 80 unique cultures represented amongst its member base.
The MCSA not only welcomes all Australians, it actively advocates and provides opportunities for all.
The association provides a socially cohesive, safe and fun football environment for Melbourne’s diverse community to enjoy.
