2022 Women’s Football Carnival of Nations – Matchday 2 Report

Matchday 2 of the 2022 Women’s Football Carnival of Nations took place at Darebin International Sports Centre on Sunday, with 51 goals being scored across 13 games in the competitive and social divisions.

After 80 goals were scored in the same amount of games last week, Matchday 2 was hotly contested and competitive across the board.

In the social (Wattle) division, team Bahamas made their much anticipated debut in the tournament, downing Greece 6-1 to firmly announce themselves as one of the competition's favourites. The drama continued in the following game, as Sweden stormed home from two goals behind to snatch a 2-2 draw with Austria.

The competitive (Eucalyptus) division kicked-off in the afternoon, as Tuvalu showed their potential by beating England 2-1 before Mauritius overcame a gallant Malta 2-0 in front of a large crowd.

Afghanistan took full advantage of the mercy rule, scoring four second half goals to beat Brazil 4-3. Under the tournament’s mercy rule, in order to prevent blow-out scores, a team behind by three goals is to put two additional players on the pitch.
