National Volunteer Week (May 20-26) stands as Australia’s premier annual celebration of volunteering, highlighting the invaluable contributions individuals make to various causes.
Football Victoria is proud to join this celebration by spotlighting some of our remarkable volunteers from our community, recognising their diverse talents and unwavering passion for volunteering.
Laurel Irving
Laurel Irvine is known as the heart and soul of Sale United Football Club.
In the club’s milestone 50th Anniversary Year, her commitment stands out as she coordinates 17 junior teams and five senior teams, while also coaching the GO Soccer Mums, GO Girls programs, and the MiniRoos Kickoff program.
Sale United FC said Laurel's "selflessness and unwavering dedication" represent the spirit of volunteerism, making her an invaluable asset to Sale United FC and the broader Latrobe Valley region.
Laurel's passion has been a driving force behind the growth of female football in the region," the Club said.
For 16 years, her year-round dedication has inspired others to volunteer. She initiated Girls Only Come N Try days, significantly boosting female participation, and revived the women's team in 2017, even playing herself to ensure adequate numbers."
Each week, Laurel dons many hats: running lines, handling Marshall duties, managing the canteen, and operating the uniform shop.
Her journey with the Club began in 2008 as a team manager, and her contributions as a volunteer have only grown since. Most notably, she orchestrated the Annual Primary School Twilight Tournament - with 67 teams participating in the 30th anniversary year, and she has trained youth members as referees.
