2025 CommBank Emerging Matildas Championships Day Five

Day 5 was a standout for Victoria at the CommBank Emerging Matildas Championships, with two thrilling penalty shootout victories and one of our U16 teams securing a place in tomorrow’s final.

Victoria Blue U15s kicked off Day 5 with a solid 2-0 win over Malaysia, thanks to goals from Violet Hall and Revera Ishak. Later that evening, they faced Western Australia in the 5v6 play-off at 7:00pm, falling just short in a 2-1 defeat. Daijela Trncic scored the side’s only goal as they finished the tournament in sixth place.

Victoria White opened Day 5 with a narrow loss to NSW Country, with Sienna Martins netting their lone goal. However, they bounced back in their final match of the tournament, securing a 1-0 win over Northern Territory thanks to a decisive strike from Nikki Ziovas.

In the U16s, Victoria Blue booked their place in the Championship Final with a hard-fought 5-3 win on penalties over Queensland, after the two sides were locked at 0-0 at the end of regular time.

Victoria White took the field at 12:20pm against Northern NSW, with the match finishing 1-1 in regulation time. Once again, Victoria held their nerve in a penalty shootout, securing a spot in the 5v5 play-off tomorrow morning at 8:20am.

Finalists Confirmed

The Under 15 Championship Final promises to be a thrilling clash between NSW Sky and Northern NSW, with both teams boasting attacking talent across the park.

NSW Sky booked their place in the decider with a commanding 4-1 win in the first semi-final of the day, while Northern NSW matched that result, defeating Queensland Maroon 4-1 in an equally impressive performance.

In the Under 16 age group, NSW Sky will take on Victoria Blue in what shapes as a high-quality contest to finish the tournament.

Capital Football’s remarkable run came to an end against a dominant NSW Sky outfit, who secured a 5-0 semi-final win. In the other semi-final, Victoria Blue and Queensland Maroon played out one of the matches of the tournament in a tightly fought encounter that required penalties to separate the sides, with Victoria Blue eventually prevailing.

Queensland Maroon and NSW Navy will meet in the Under 15 bronze medal match, while Capital Football face Queensland Maroon in the Under 16 bronze medal match.

Capital Courage – Canberra’s Run to the Final Four

They might be one of the smallest programs in the country, but Capital Football’s Under 16 side made a big impression at the 2025 CommBank Emerging Matildas Championships.

Their fairy tale run came to a close today with a semi-final loss to NSW Sky, but not before they turned heads by qualifying for the final four in a huge achievement for a group that came into the tournament with no expectations.

“We didn’t set any goals coming in,” said Head Coach Scott Conlon.

“We just wanted to be proud of ourselves after each game, and I think we’ve done that. There’s not one game where we’ve walked away disappointed.”

The road to Sydney wasn’t exactly smooth, with only 25 players eligible at the start of the process and even fewer by the time the tournament began. But that didn’t stop the group from finding its rhythm.

“It took us a couple of games to really gel,” Conlon continued.

“But once we did, the girls started doing some really good stuff. A lot of them already knew each other from local comps, so there was already a strong bond.”

That close-knit connection proved a strength, as did the environment created by Conlon and his assistant Mark.

“We just tried to empower them to be amazing, and they really thrived.”

Tomorrow, Capital Football will play off for the Bronze Medal in the Under 16 Age Group against Queensland Maroon in what could be one of their best-ever finishes at the tournament.

“There are a few federations with more resources and full-time programs who’d have loved to be in the top four. But sometimes you get a few things right, ride that wave, and big things happen.

Northern Attitude

Northern NSW Football are through to the Under 15 Final of the 2025 CommBank Emerging Matildas Championships and according to head coach Helen Moseley, they’ve more than earned their place.

“We’re super excited,” Moseley said.

“I think the girls deserve to be in the final. The professionalism they’ve shown on and off the pitch this week has been amazing.”

In a tense semi-final, Northern NSW pulled away in the second half to secure the win, showing calm heads and a now-familiar resilience.

“We’ve been one-nil down before and come back stronger every single time,” Moseley said.

“There was no panic – just belief in each other.”

That belief has been the team’s quiet superpower throughout the week, with a tight-knit squad, strong culture, and a balanced playing style.

“Our special ingredient has just been the players,” Moseley said.

“They’ve been professional, focused, and they work together as one unit whether that’s in attack, defence, everything. It’s just a solid team.”

“It’ll be a big crowd, which will only lift them more. We knew we had a job to do today and now we’ve earned our shot at the title.”
