The 2026 Mitre National Futsal Championships came to a thrilling conclusion on Saturday, January 20, with Victoria securing back-to-back Open Men’s national titles in a memorable week of competition.
Football Victoria (FV) sent 15 teams to the tournament, held on the Gold Coast from January 13–17, as the nation’s best futsal talent came together across five action-packed days.
A total of 1,524 goals were scored throughout the championships, including 73 goals on the final day alone, highlighting the attacking quality on display.
Day 5 began with two Victorian teams still in contention. The Youth Women fought bravely but were edged out 4–3 by NSW Metro in a tightly contested match to start the day.
FV Futsal Program Coordinator Jimmy Soufis described the championships as a “great week” for the sport.
“It was fantastic to have the best futsal players in the country all in the one place at the same time,” Soufis said.
“I’m incredibly proud of every player, coach and staff member involved, and especially proud of the Open Men for the way they represented Victoria and performed on the biggest stage.”
The final match of the tournament delivered a classic, as the Open Men capped off the championships in dramatic fashion. After an intense 1–1 draw against Football Queensland, Victoria held their nerve to claim the national title with a 3–0 victory in the penalty shoot-out.
The tournament marked the culmination of months of preparation, including statewide trials, the appointment of coaches and team managers, and weeks of dedicated training sessions to ensure teams were ready to compete at the highest level.
