A new era of unity for Victorian Football

Football Victoria (FV) is proud to mark a defining moment in the state’s football history, with seven former Associations transitioning their clubs and players under FV, in an exciting new statewide structure.

For the first time, Victorian football is operating under a new unified model, bringing the majority of clubs across the state together under a structure that truly reflects the name Football Victoria.

This milestone is the result of the extensive 2023-2024 Regional Football Review, which engaged deeply with regional clubs, volunteers and participants through surveys, interviews and workshops. Their insights shaped a series of recommendations, endorsed by the FV Board in 2024 and designed to strengthen support for clubs, streamline administration and build a more connected football ecosystem across Victoria.

Under the new model, the following regions will now operate directly under the Football Victoria banner, removing the Association level:

  • FV Greater Ballarat (formerly Ballarat District Soccer Association)
  • FV Greater Bendigo (formerly Bendigo Amateur Soccer League)
  • FV Gippsland (formerly Gippsland Soccer League)
  • FV Latrobe Valley (formerly Latrobe Valley Soccer League)
  • FV Shepparton (newly formed)
  • FV South West (formerly South West Victoria Football Association)
  • FV Sunraysia (formerly Football Federation Sunraysia)

These seven join FV Geelong, who continue their on-going association with FV which has been in place since 2010.

Together, these regions represent thousands of players and volunteers who will now benefit from FV’s direct administration, enhanced pathways and a consistent statewide approach.

The Albury-Wodonga Football Association will remain aligned with Football NSW due to its unique cross-border context; and the Shepparton Junior Soccer Association will transition to an independent schools-based competition.

To support a smooth and successful transition, FV has established a dedicated Regional Football Team, led by Regional Development Manager Lauren Stevens.

A network of Development Coordinators across Geelong, Gippsland, Latrobe Valley, Greater Ballarat, Greater Bendigo, Sunraysia, Shepparton and South West will provide localised support and give every region a direct voice within FV.

The FV team will be guided by, and work in collaboration with Regional Advisory Panels that have been established to ensure each region maintains its important local identity.

FV CEO Dan Birrell paid tribute to the longstanding contribution of regional communities.

“Our regions have always played a wonderful and defining role in shaping football in Victoria.

“We are excited to honour that legacy while working side-by-side to build the next chapter - one that strengthens connections and creates a more unified and sustainable future for football across the state.”

FV Regional Development Manager, Lauren Stevens celebrated the significant milestone in Victorian football history.

“This is an incredibly exciting step for football in regional Victoria.

“By bringing these regions together under one structure, we’re creating a stronger, more connected football community.

“Our focus is on supporting clubs, improving the experience for players and volunteers and ensuring regional voices are heard at every level of the game.

Ballarat Regional Advisory Panel Chair Lucy Brennan said the region is energised and optimistic about what the future holds.

“After a strong consultation process between Football Victoria and the Ballarat affiliated clubs, we are excited for the next phase of football in Ballarat under the guidance and support of Football Victoria.

“As a past player & coach, I could not be more excited to help provide these opportunities for the Ballarat Football Region and look forward to the support, input and discussion to ensure we are setting our region up for success now and in the future.

“I thank the BDSA Board for the work they have done and the legacy they leave, as it gives us a strong foundation to build upon.”

This transition marks a new era of unity, collaboration and growth. With planning for the 2026 season already well underway, FV warmly welcomes our regional partners and looks forward to shaping the future of the game across the state together.
