Match day 1 of the 2022 Women’s Football Carnival of Nations a resounding success
Match day 1 of the 2022 Women’s Football Carnival of Nations held at the Darebin International Sports Centre on Sunday 2 October 2022 was a resounding success. The weather was fantastic. The carnival vibe was great with games on the three artificial pitches entertaining spectators.
Throughout the day, 80 goals were scored in 13 matches. In the much anticipated opening match of the competitive (Eucalyptus) division Brazil beat Cyprus 1-0. However the first goal of the tournament was scored by Costa Rica against the USA. In the social (Wattle) division Austria won 3-0 against Greece and then debutants San Marino accounted for Sweden 6-3 in a free flowing encounter. Elsewhere in Eucalyptus, Afghanistan and Turkiye scored a massive 12 and 10 goals respectively. Thanks to a new grading system most games were closely contested by teams of similar player ability and age.
The annual Women’s Football Carnival of Nations is held on four consecutive Sundays 2, 9, 16 and 23 October 2022 across the three artificial pitches at the Darebin International Sports Centre. The Carnival showcases women’s football and is a perfect opportunity for women of all abilities to play in a competitive yet social environment. Everyone is invited to come along a have a good time.
A record number of 29 teams comprising of 604 players entered the 2022 Carnival. Three teams, Bahamas, Argentina and France will join this year’s tournament in the coming weeks.
Match day 2 fixtures are now published. The first match on Sunday 9 October 2022 at 12 noon will be contested by England and Tuvalu. Everyone is warmly invited to come along and support our female footballers.
