All-Abilities April Player Spotlight: Zac Anderson

Throughout All-Abilities April, we are proud to share the stories of participants and clubs making football more inclusive for everyone.

For 19-year-old university student Zac Anderson, a vision impairment has never been a barrier to pursuing his football dreams. Twice, he has represented Victoria at the National Futsal Championships, helping his team reach both a Semi-Final and Grand Final.

“I played in the NPL system for Mornington throughout my junior years and was never really interested in indoor football,” Anderson said. “But in 2023, I fell in love with the game.”

After taking a year off from outdoor football, Anderson discovered an opportunity to play for Victoria’s Athletes with Disabilities (AWD) Futsal team. It turned out to be a life-changing decision.

“In my first year playing AWD Futsal, it really boosted my confidence. I played well, which made me want to return to Mornington and perform at a high level again.”

Anderson acknowledges that his vision presents challenges, particularly with tracking long, high balls. However, he doesn’t see it as a disadvantage—just a different way of experiencing the game.

“My impairment isn’t too bad overall, but I do struggle with balls in the air. That’s why Futsal suits me better. But you adapt—because when it’s all you’ve ever known, it just feels normal,” he explained.

Beyond the competition, Anderson says the most rewarding part of AWD Futsal has been the friendships and sense of belonging.

“The best part is definitely the social aspect—playing alongside great people who have become good friends. But, of course, representing Victoria is the greatest honour,” he said.

“I’ve always wanted to represent Victoria in any sport, so to do it in Futsal has been incredible. At my first Nationals, I scored twice in the final—which was a huge highlight—even though we lost to Queensland. This year, playing in Victoria with so many friends and family watching was really special.”

Anderson encourages anyone with a disability to give football a go, no matter their age or background.

“I never really knew what was possible, and now I’ve never looked back,” he said.

“To anyone in a similar position—whether you’re young or old—there are plenty of opportunities in Victoria. There’s an AWD league, and lots of teams to get involved with. Just go for it—you never know where it might take you.”
