Avondale can't put a step wrong this season and in Round 19 the ladder-leaders broke the NPLM Victoria goal-scoring record in their 4-0 defeat of Green Gully.
The Avengers have scored 65 goals with seven matches remaining, dethroning South Melbourne’s 2016 record of 64 goals in their Championship winning year.
Avondale coach Zoran Markovski said it was a “massive accomplishment” for his side, however,, he hoped it was a sign of things to come.
“This group just keeps rocking up and playing decent football, and is scoring goals for fun at the minute,” he said.
“It is something I don’t really worry about, I didn’t even know until someone told me this week, but hopefully our goal-scoring form continues for weeks to come.”
Despite winning 17 out of a possible 19 matches so far this season, Avondale will not underestimate any of their opponents on the way home, in a bid to avoid complacency.
“We pretty much have seven games of finals before the end of the season, and we will treat every team with respect and come in and take the game on,” Markovsk explained.
“To score 65 goals in 19 games, I don’t think that’s been done before anywhere, that’s the way we like to about it, we like to entertain.”
Avondale’s forward mix is unparalleled with Liam Boland (10 goals), Stefan Zinni, Zander Guy (9 goals), Yousef Ahmed (8 goals) and Kristian Trajceski (7 goals) all capable of stepping up on any given day.
In the mid-season transfer period, Avondale further bolstered their forward stocks by recruiting St Albans striker George Ott, replacing Manny Aguek has departed the club to join Maltese club Balzan FC.
The plethora of forward options creates plenty of selection headaches for Markovski and his coaching staff, however,, the players are rising to the occasion with pressure to perform.
“I only look towards the week ahead and the best three to me will start,” they are all fighting for positions,” Markovski explained.
“They will be told on Friday night before the game who will be starting against the knights, it’s still up in the air.
“We’ve got a calibre of seven to eight players who can play in the frontline and the way we have been sharing the goals around has been phenomenal, It’s a great team effort.”
In Round 20, Avondale faces the fellow-contender Melbourne Knights in a battle that will shape the top four come season's end.
“I think it is going to be an exciting game, I look at Avondale and Knights and I think they are the best two footballing teams in the league,” Markovski said.
“Ben Cahn (Melbourne Knights Head Coach) has done an amazing job, full respect to him and his group I think they are a really good footballing team.”
