Avondale are 'not going to change' a thing ahead of Sunday's NPLM Grand Final

Avondale will look to claim the double this Sunday afternoon at Olympic Village when they face South Melbourne after one of the most dominant home and away seasons on record.

The Avengers had an unbelievable record this season, scoring 78 goals and only losing one match (against South Melbourne).

Head Coach Zoran said he was a “big believer” in the home and away season and claimed his side’s form was undeniable.

“It happens all over the world, here we call it the minor premiership but that accomplishment I a major one,” he explained.

“You play everyone at their ground and at your ground and to lose one out of 26, that is never going to happen in Victorian football for a long time, for me that is the major one we and achieved that, our regular season form stacks up.”

Markovski’s men overcame the Melbourne Knights in the NPLM Semi-Finals 1-0 after having the week off, following finishing first on the table.

Following a tense, scoreless first half, Avondale clinched its spot in the NPLM decider through a clutch Kristian Trajceski strike in the 71st minute.

“Sometimes when you have a week off it can be a little detrimental to your season as we had plenty of momentum from winning plenty of football games and we worked hard throughout the week and were able to make it through to the big dance,” Markovski explained.

"Kristian has been outstanding this year, just grown in leaps and bounds and really focused on his football, and has taken his game to another level, he has developed into some footballer.

“The two previous times we lost against them he wasn’t playing through suspension, but when he was playing in Round 25, we know the scoreline.”

Avondale celebrate Semi-final
Avondale celebrates Kristian Trajceski's winning goal in the 2023 Semi-Final.

After a near-flawless season, Markovski explained celebrations were not over the top following their Semi-Final victory, with the players knowing the job wasn’t done yet.

"We are going to really enjoy the week,” he said.

“I think when we beat South Melbourne (Round 25) the celebrations were bigger knowing we had just won the Premiership and that was a key game.

“I think the guys knew heading into the finals game there was one more massive game that we have got to attack and attack on the front foot.

“It was a great win but we know there is one more big game to go against South Melbourne this week.”

Markovski said after a lean patch against South Melbourne, his group will take plenty of confidence out of their Round 25 2-1 Premier's Plate clinching securing victory.

"Before ‘that game I think the last three games South has had the wood over us since 2019 we have dominated South Melbourne, to go into the game knowing we knocked them off the last game, we will be going in fully focused and confident we can get the result.”

This weekend, the two top sides in the NPLM will do battle, and despite South Melbourne possessing the best defensive record in the league, the Avengers are not going to take a backward step.

“You look at the bigger picture and I know there are finals but at the same time we are the top two teams and have both had a super consistent season,” Markovski said.

“Looking at South Melbourne, they are a really good team that dominated the league for a couple of seasons. The way I see it, we are going to put them on the back foot nice and early.

“We know the way they play, it is two different styles of football, but they are good at what they do, but we are not going to change the way we go about it.

“It’s going to be a massive game, the two top teams in Victorian football going at it.

“Full respect to them, they are a good team, but I expect my boys to work hard and hopefully deliver the ultimate prize back to Avondale.”
