Eastern Oval Upgrade Opens New Opportunities for Football in Western Victoria

Football in the South West of Victoria has received a major boost with the official opening of the upgraded Eastern Oval at Brierly Recreation Reserve on February 14. The transformation of the playing surface will provide greater access to high-quality facilities for local clubs, players, and the broader community.

The upgraded Eastern Oval is set to become a key venue for local competitions, providing two top-tier playing pitches for clubs and community programs alike. Football Victoria (FV) looks forward to seeing the positive impact this facility will have on the game, ensuring that more players, coaches, and supporters can experience high-quality football in the South West.

Mayor Cr Ben Blain and Member for Western Victoria Jacinta Ermacora led the opening ceremony, celebrating the $2.5 million redevelopment that ensures year-round opportunities for football.

The new surface features automated irrigation, improved drainage, and enhanced 200 lux lighting, making it a premier venue for training and match days regardless of weather conditions - realising the long term vision of dedicated Warrnambool Rangers volunteers like Garrett Wyse, John Berg, and Cameron Pyke.

"With the new playing surface featuring state-of-the-art irrigation, drainage, and lighting, Brierly Reserve can now host football matches and training sessions in all conditions, giving more people the chance to play and enjoy the game," Cr Blain said.

The Victorian Government contributed $1 million to the project through the Local Sports Infrastructure Fund, with the local Council delivering the remaining investment. This crucial funding has delivered a significant upgrade that will support the continued growth of football in the region.

"We thank the Victorian Government for their investment in this vital project. Upgrades like these ensure our local footballers have the facilities they need to develop their skills and stay active," Cr Blain added.

With stage one of the Brierly Reserve redevelopment now complete, the focus shifts to the next phase, which includes plans for a new sports and community hub.

The proposed stage two development will deliver a pavilion, female-friendly change-rooms and dedicated spaces for local groups, further strengthening football’s accessibility and inclusivity in the region - to develop a true hub for football in the South West.
