Essendon Royals were crowned 2026 Nike FC Cup Winners after a commanding 4-0 victory over Heidelberg United on a cold Saturday night at The Home of The Matildas.
The result marked a historic occasion for the Royals, securing the club’s first-ever senior women’s silverware in the Football Victoria Nike FC Cup since the competition’s re-establishment in 2014.
In front of a strong crowd, Essendon delivered a composed and clinical performance on the biggest stage, controlling the contest from the opening whistle to lift the coveted cup and cap off a memorable campaign.
The opening exchanges were tightly contested, with both sides settling into the occasion inside a packed Home of the Matildas. Heidelberg looked to apply early pressure and earned the first opportunity of note in the 16th minute, winning a free kick in a promising position, but Essendon’s defence stood firm to clear the danger.
The Royals responded moments later and found the breakthrough in the 18th minute. Maggie Jenkins struck first for Essendon, finishing a well-worked attacking move to hand the Royals the advantage and ignite celebrations among the travelling support.
Heidelberg attempted to respond as the half progressed, pushing forward in search of an equaliser and creating periods of attacking pressure. However, Essendon remained organised defensively, limiting Heidelberg’s opportunities and protecting their narrow lead.
With two minutes of stoppage time played, the referee brought the first half to a close with Essendon Royals heading into the break with a 1-0 advantage.
Essendon emerged from the interval with renewed intensity and quickly extended their lead. The Royals’ attacking pressure paid dividends in the opening stages of the second half, with further goals in the 46th and 53rd minutes through Kelli McGroarty putting Heidelberg under significant pressure.
Now trailing 3-0, Heidelberg searched for a way back into the contest but struggled to break down a disciplined Essendon defence. The Royals continued to threaten in transition, using their pace and movement in attack to create further opportunities.
The final blow arrived in the 78th minute, as Jenkins scored her second of the night to put the result beyond doubt and confirm their status as 2026 Nike FC Cup Winners.
Despite the scoreline, Heidelberg continued to compete until the final whistle, pushing forward in search of a consolation goal and creating late attacking moments that came in the 93rd minute through a penalty converted by Mischa Anderson.
As the final whistle sounded, celebrations erupted among the Royals players, staff and supporters as Essendon lifted the Nike FC Cup trophy for the first time in club history, their first ever major trophy.
A double brace from both Royals imports secured the cup on a memorable night as Essendon became the first team to win both the Steph Catley Plate and Nike FC Cup. It was a special night for Maggie Jenkins as she not only scored twice but also was awarded the Theresa Deas Medal.
The victory capped off a remarkable cup campaign for Essendon Royals, who delivered when it mattered most to claim Football Victoria’s prestigious knockout title and create a new chapter in the club’s history.
