Football Victoria (FV) has strengthened its partnership with La Trobe University to support the RISE program, an initiative designed to help Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students build confidence, connect with culture, and explore pathways into university.
As part of the program, FV delivered a football clinic for the second consecutive year at The Home of The Matildas, giving participants the opportunity to play on elite facilities and experience how sport can contribute to education and community connection.
FV Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Project Manager, Sophie Brynes said it is “really special” see how programs like RISE create space for First Nations young people to connect, share culture, and build confidence.
“Football is just one of the ways we can support that journey and celebrate what the program represents,” she said.
This year, up to 40 students took to the pitch, marking the second consecutive year Football Victoria has supported the program.
The RISE with La Trobe program engages high school students in Years 9 to 12 and provides academic, cultural, and social support to help participants transition successfully to university. By combining mentoring, hands-on learning, and engagement with football, the program helps students develop skills both on and off the field.

Jake Sanders, RISE Program Facilitator – Indigenous Student Success, highlighted the partnership as a reflection of shared values and a genuine commitment to community connection.
“Sport brings diverse groups together to strengthen social and cultural connections, as well as opening up potential career opportunities,” he said.
“Partnering with Football Victoria to involve our Rise students has been so rewarding for us, our programs share a common focus to inspire and motivate young First Nations students to realise their potential.
“We look forward to continuing this partnership and involving more Indigenous students.”
FV looks forward to continuing its partnership with La Trobe University and supporting initiatives that use football as a vehicle for education, empowerment, and cultural connection.
