A tremendous acknowledgment for a worthy recipient! Football Victoria (FV) proudly celebrates the announcement that Darebin Falcons Vice President and Head of Soccer, Jasmine Hirst, has been named the 2025 Local Hero for Victoria in the 2025 Australian of the Year Awards.
A member at the Falcons since 2006, Hirst has supported hundreds of women and girls to play football, playing an instrumental role in the growth of the sport in Victoria.
Hirst launched the junior girls’ football program at the Darebin Falcons Women’s Sports Club with just one team in 2011.
Across 14 years, the program has grown exponentially. In 2024, Hirst was instrumental in supporting 30 junior and senior football teams to play our game, with 550 women and girls - including the largest girls MiniRoos and MiniTillies programs in Victoria.
The Local Hero Award is a celebration of people who have worked tirelessly over many years to make their community a better, kinder and more inclusive place. One of the most prestigious awards in Victoria,it recognises the ordinary people who do extraordinary things for the community.
When asked to reflect on the honor, Hirst took the opportunity to thank her fellow volunteers and female sports compatriots who she has worked hard with for over a decade.
"I'm deeply honored to receive this award, and I share it with every Darebin Falcons volunteer and all female sports administrators embracing the power of sport.
Together, we’re building a community where everyone has a chance to thrive, and I’m so grateful to be part of the journey."
Jasmine’s tireless efforts have given women and girls access to local facilities, grounds and equipment – creating Australia’s biggest football program for women and girls.
In 2020, Jasmine launched the Young Referees Program to increase the number of female referees in Victoria.
One of Australia’s most influential female football administrators, Jasmine’s trailblazing work has had a profound influence on growing football participation rates across Australia and an extraordinary impact on the perception of female football within her community.
Darebin Women's Sports Club President, Jane Ryan, said the Club was incredibly proud of Hirst and everything she has achieved.
"We celebrate not just a local hero, but a true champion of empowerment, equity, and opportunity. Jasmine is a fierce advocate for the rights of girls and women, and her passion has single-handedly created our thriving soccer program.
"This award is a testament to her tireless work and commitment to making a lasting difference in our community. We are so proud of her, and we know her impact will continue to resonate far beyond the pitch."
Hirst was one of four Victorians announced at the Victorian Australian of The Year Awards ceremony in Melbourne on Friday night, and will now join those from the other states and territories for the National Awards, to be announced on 25 January 2025.
On behalf of the Victorian Football Family - Congratulations Jasmine!
