As the FIFA World Cup 2026™ unfolds, Socceroo Jordy Bos has emerged as one of Australia's brightest talents on the biggest stage in world football.
The 23-year-old left-back has established himself in Europe with Dutch giants Feyenoord, but before the bright lights of the World Cup, UEFA Champions League football and the Eredivisie, Bos was honing his craft in Melbourne's west with Hoppers Crossing SC.
Former Hoppers Crossing SC Team Manager Peter Hale, who worked closely with Bos during his time at the club said the defender’s rise to football’s biggest stage comes as little surprise.
“Early days it was clear that he had the physical attributes and the desire,” Hale said.
“Even when kids are young, you never know how they’re going to unfold, but Jordy has taken on every challenge he’s faced and he’s become better every time. He’s always risen to it.”
Despite only playing a small role in Bos’ journey, Hale said it has been great to see how far he has come.
“Personally, I feel proud of what he’s achieved,” he said. “I’m really happy for him because he’s worked hard for this. It’s a big thing.”
“Seeing how far Jordy has come gives people confidence in what can be achieved and motivates the next generation.”
Hale remembers Bos standing out despite his size.
“He wasn’t the biggest guy when he started, but even then, it was clear he was special,” he said.
“He was blessed with the physical attributes, but it was also his technique, his understanding of the game and his willingness to keep improving.”
Bos would go on to represent Victoria before joining the academy of Melbourne City FC, where he continued his development through the professional pathway.
Former Football Victoria Technical Director Boris Seroshtan remembers first identifying Bos through the Victorian talent pathway.
"He was a little bit more developed than Connor (Metcalfe), but still small," Seroshtan recalled.
"Jordy was quick, but also small. They didn't have size at that point in time, but we definitely saw them as worth investing in.
"He had speed and stamina, but he didn't have size at that point in time. We were aware it's only a matter of time when you have a player with good technical ability, intelligence, and the right qualities – they will progress further."
After progressing through Melbourne City's academy, Bos made his senior debut in 2021 before quickly becoming one of the competition's most exciting young defenders.
His performances earned a move to Belgian side KVC Westerlo in 2023 before another significant step in his career when he signed for Feyenoord.
Now, as Australia competes at the FIFA World Cup 2026™, Bos carries with him the experiences and lessons that began on local pitches in Melbourne’s west, with the tournament’s final stages potentially propelling him to even greater heights.
