A perfect Melbourne afternoon and a packed Lakeside Stadium set the stage for the 2026 New Balance Dockerty Cup Final, as Preston Lions battled their way to a 3-1 win over Heidelberg United.
It was a historic day for Preston as they came back from a goal down against their famous foe and lifted the cup for the first time in 34 years.
The Final started with plenty of intensity, with Preston Lions’ Dom Folino taking a heavy blow early on which sparked a brief fracas and set the tone for an action-packed opening stanza.
After weeks on the sidelines, Heidelberg goalkeeper Yaren Sozer was called into action early, with the 2025 NPLM Goalkeeper of the Year forced to make several interceptions outside his six-yard box inside the opening five minutes as Preston looked to threaten in behind.
Jamal Ali was also heavily involved early, seeing plenty of the ball down the right-hand side with his pinpoint, powerful passing causing problems for the Heidelberg defence.
Cian Cuba continued to be a threat from set pieces, with his 20th-minute corner producing a promising chance as his piercing delivery was driven dangerously towards goal.
Despite Preston’s early pressure, it was Heidelberg who broke the deadlock through Nicholas Duarte, who produced a moment of brilliance at the far post with an acrobatic finish that found the back of the net.
But before the Heidelberg supporters could settle into their advantage, Preston found another gear.
The Lions struck twice in the space of five minutes to completely turn the Final on its head. Zach Cianci timed his jump to perfection to head home the equaliser, before Stefan Zinni reacted quickest to a Sozer save and fired Preston into a 2-1 lead.
From trailing 1-0 to leading 2-1, Preston had completed a remarkable turnaround before the half-time whistle, setting up a huge second half at Lakeside Stadium.
Heidelberg thought they had levelled the contest in the 64th minute when Ayden Brice inadvertently turned the ball into his own net. However, AR2 Nikoletta Sotiropoulos had already raised her flag for offside, with Ben Collins deemed to have made contact with the ball from an offside position before it came back off Brice and into the net.
As the game entered its final stages, Preston continued to have the better of the chances, despite Heidelberg pushing for an equaliser.
Christian Theoharous came closest for the Bergers in the 85th minute with a dipping effort from distance, but the shot failed to dip enough and sailed just over the crossbar.
With the final whistle only moments away, midfield maestro Luca Tevere put the result beyond doubt. Finding himself one-on-one with Yaren Sozer, Tevere calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net to send the Preston fans into raptures.
After scoring the decisive third goal for Preston, Tevere’s day was capped off by being named the Jimmy Mackay Medallist as the best on ground in the 2026 New Balance Dockerty Cup Final.
