Round 6 throws 16 tantalising matchups our way, including a VPL1 vs VPL2 showdown, a huge test for our one remaining State League club, potential NPLM giants clashing and high-octane shootouts.
South Melbourne FC and Pascoe Vale FC might be struggling in the NPLM and VPLM2 competitions respectively, but, for one of these sides, the dream of silverware in 2025 will live on. Don't let the gap in competitions fool you, this promises to be a tight battle between two sides desperate to find some form.
Similar to Pascoe Vale, fellow VPLM2 side Nunawading City FC's season has not gone to script so far, sitting second last on the table. But a road win against VPL1 side North Sunshine Eagles SC, fresh off a strong 4-2 win against Banyule City SC, would be a massive lift.
One of the hotter sides in the state is VPLM1 Club Northcote City FC, who will like their chances in a match at John Cain Memorial Park against a Melbourne Knights side struggling for form in the NPLM. But a win for the Knights could be the perfect reset for the former NSL giants. The Knights are currently languishing near the bottom of the NPL table but have enjoyed two solid wins in the Cup against Beaumaris SC and Werribee City FC. Intriguing match-up indeed.
Dandenong City SC play host to Brunswick City SC in the next matchup, and it promises to be a beauty. Brunswick are currently sitting fourth in the VPLM1 and have looked strong in their two Dockerty Cup showings. They come up against a Dandenong City side who have shown flashes so far this season but have failed to solidify themselves as one of the top sides in the NPLM.
Coming into the draw, our last State League Club FC Clifton Hill probably would have flagged a handful of teams they would prefer not to run into in the Round of 16. High on their list would have been Heidelberg United FC, who are battling hard for top spot in the NPLM. This would be a seriously good Cup-set if Clifton Hill could pull this one off on the road.
Whittlesea United SC, fresh off their own Cup-set against Preston, will have to wait until next week to find out which NPLM club they will take on in the Round of 16, as Green Gully SC and Dandenong Thunder FC still need to play this Tuesday night. Whoever wins will play host in what will be a must-watch clash.
Expect plenty of goals in the matchup between NPLM ladder leaders Avondale FC and Manningham United Blues FC, fresh off their 6-4 win over Chisholm United in Round 5. This will be a tough one for the Blues, as Avondale have looked near unstoppable in the NPLM so far this season, but what a story it would be.
And finally, we have a very exciting matchup between Hume City FC and either Oakleigh Cannons FC and FC Bulleen Lions, who play their Round 5 fixture on Wednesday night. Whether it's the Cannons or Lions, a road game at Nasiol Stadium is never an easy task and Hume have played some great football so far this year.
Wins in Round 7 not only mean a trip to the semi-finals of the Dockerty Cup, but also locks in a place in the Round of 32 of the Hahn Australia Cup.
Round 7 will run from Tuesday June 10 through to Tuesday June 17.
