Victoria’s support for the Subway Socceroos has taken the world by storm with fans flocking to Federation Square to support the national team.
Melbourne’s cultural hub will be screening Australia’s crucial clash against Denmark tomorrow at 2am AEDT on the big screen, with large numbers expected at the live sight.
Victorian midfielder Jackson Irvine sent a message to all Melbournians ahead of Thursday’s match.
“I just want to give a massive shout-out to everyone at Fed Square,” he said.
“We’ve absolutely loved seeing the scenes of you guys out against Tunisia, and in my hometown, I hope we give you another memorable night here tonight.”
Irvine was so impressed by the scenes that he wished he could be a part of the celebrations back home.
“Jesus Christ,” Irvine said when he saw the footage.
“I wish I could do both (play and watch). That just looks absolutely incredible and I hope every single one of them has got tonight as a moment they all remember for the rest of their lives.
“I've been a part of those kinds of moments before as a fan and the fact that we've created that for somebody else is just, it's too special to even put into words.”
Victoria’s Jamie Maclaren revealed the playing group has drawn inspiration from the overarching support shown in Melbourne.
"It gives me goosebumps seeing that because that’s in Melbourne, my hometown,” he said.
“I was probably that young kid doing that in 2006 and 2010 so to bring joy to Australia’s faces is refreshing and nice because they all so deserve it.
“We are just a bunch of honest guys that represent our country and nothing prouder than to win the game.”
