Sydenham Park becomes first club in North-West to showcase All-Abilities football

In a display of inclusivity, Sydenham Park Soccer Club has launched the first All Abilities football program in Melbourne’s North-West.

Driven by passionate volunteers and a vision to make football accessible to everyone, the initiative is already making a difference in the Brimbank and Melton communities.

The program was born from the determination of Sydenham's All Abilities Coordinator Christina Santa Maria. After struggling to find a suitable local football program for her son, Christina decided to take action.

“I initiated the program due to the lack of All Abilities programs in the Western Suburbs,” she explained.

“As a mother of a neurodiverse child, having a sport that is accommodating to him is very important.

“Choosing Sydenham Park was an easy decision. My family are already part of the club. With great facilities, a strong junior program, and being just 20 minutes from home—it was the perfect fit.”

The club’s commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment quickly gained traction as MiniRoos and Junior Coordinator Sera Fanous worked closely with Football Victoria to bring the idea to life.

After attending seminars, collaborating with local families and services, and securing support from local NDIS businesses and Brimbank Council, the program officially launched on June 28.

“The goal was always to create a safe, inclusive, and enjoyable space where people of all abilities could enjoy soccer,” Fanous said.

“One of the biggest benefits has been watching the players smile. The friendships, confidence, and sense of belonging this program has brought are incredible.”

Despite early challenges including building awareness and earning the trust of families, the program has flourished, thanks to a united effort from the club and community.

“The support we’ve received from Football Victoria, especially Selin Arpaci and the All-Abilities team, has been outstanding,” Fanous added.

“Their guidance and belief in the program helped us get off the ground.”

The initiative has become more than just a training session. It’s a beacon of inclusion and a model for other clubs to follow.
