Velupillay’s Journey Comes Full Circle with World Cup Debut

Nishan Velupillay’s journey from grassroots football in Victoria to the international stage has come full circle, as the Melbourne Victory forward made his FIFA World Cup debut against Turkey in Australia’s opening group game.

Coming on in the 61st minute, Velupillay’s introduction marked a significant milestone in a career built through Victoria’s football pathway, a journey that began at Endeavour United and has now led to the biggest stage in world’s football.

Endeavour United Club President Victor Lemos expressed immense pride in seeing one of their own represent Australia at the highest level.

“On behalf of everyone at Endeavour United, we are proud of Nishan and what he has achieved in his career so far,” Lemos said.

“Starting at Endeavour United is an example for all grassroots clubs in Victoria and abroad. A huge example for the younger generation in the local community and local clubs.

We will be hosting all the Socceroo games at the club to witness him on the world stage. We are all behind him as with all the Socceroos.”

Velupillay is a true product of the Victorian football system, first taking up the game at a young age before progressing through the Melbourne Victory academy. Since making his senior debut in 2021, he has developed into a key contributor for Victory, amassing 146 appearances across all competitions.

His club form was rewarded with a maiden Socceroos call-up during the 2024 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, where he made an immediate impact by scoring off the bench on debut against China.

Following his selection in Australia’s 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup squad, Velupillay spoke about the moment he learned he would be representing his country on football’s biggest stage.

“You always think about these things, but once they become a reality, it’s a different feeling. I’m really happy and just ready to go,” Velupillay said.

“To make an appearance in the World Cup and to help this team would be a dream come true. Obviously, I’m an attacking player, and if I can contribute with a goal or assist, or an action that helps the team, I think it’ll make the country and my family proud.”
