Can Sydney break Melbourne's all-time Matildas attendance record set only six days ago?
Last Friday night, 50,629 spectators crammed into Marvel Stadium on Friday night to witness the Matildas defeat France 1-0, eclipsing the previous record crowd of 36,109 in 2021, at Accor Stadium in Sydney.
Matildas defender Steph Catley said it was "incredible" to play in front in her home state in the 'send-off' match against France.
"Growing up in Melbourne, I have been to this stadium a million times to watch my AFL team (St Kilda) and to be here with the Matildas (in front of a ) 50,000 sold-out crowd right before the World Cup, there is absolutely no words to describe it," she said post-match.
"I'm proud to be part of this team and also of this city for that sort of turnout."
Another sold-out crowd is expected tonight for the Matildas opening Women's World Cup match against Ireland at Stadium Australia.
"Onto next week in Sydney, 80,000; it's crazy where the games got to and I'm excited for what the World Cup holds," Catley concluded
