The inaugural U14 State of Origin Cup, hosted by Football Victoria (FV) saw eight teams from four different states and territories battle for age-group supremacy at Darebin International Sports Centre.
The three-day junior competition was an initiative brought to life by Football Victoria, Football Queensland, Football Tasmania, and Capital Football, in the absence of a National Youth Championship in the U14 age group.
FV Technical Director, Boris Serochtan said the tournament was a “major success” with players given the opportunity to test themselves against the best in their age group.
“Looking at how well received the concept was we are looking to expand and hopefully it will be an annual event,” he said.
“If we host it again next year, we will look at the possibility of more age groups as well as more state participation.
“I really appreciate the participation of all the players, coaches, parents, and referees as events like this are a real team effort.”
Football Victoria (Navy) defeated Football Victoria (Purple) 5-1 in the Grand Final, while Football Queensland (Maroon) edged Football Queensland (White) 1-0 in the third-place play-off.
2023 State of Origin Cup Results
Football Queensland State Technical Director Gabor Ganzcer explained the past week was a “great experience” for his players.
When we were made aware there was no National Youth Championships offering for this age group in 2023, we (Football Queensland) along with Football Victoria, Football Tasmania and Capital Football thought it would be extremely beneficial to get together and have a state tournament allowing an opportunity for this cohort,” he said.
“I think the last three days proved it was a good idea, the boys deserve to ply their trade against the best players from other states.
"It was a great experience to have fun, competitive games with quality football, regardless of the result, against Victoria, ACT, and Tasmania.”
