Football Victoria (FV) welcomes the announcement by the Hon. Jacinta Allan, Premier of Victoria, confirming that Fed Square will remain a live site and community gathering place for Victorians during the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026™.
The response from the Victorian community following yesterday’s news was immediate, passionate and overwhelming. Football has a unique ability to unite people from every background, culture and generation, with FIFA World Cup™ events bringing communities together in a way few other events can. Fed Square will once again provide the backdrop for unforgettable moments to be shared side by side, where strangers become friends through a shared passion for the game.
FV thanks everyone involved in reconsidering the decision and acknowledges the collective support shown to ensure our city continues to provide welcoming spaces for Victorians to come together and support our national teams on the world stage.
FV CEO Dan Birrell praised the swift response from government and the broader community.
“In the past 24 hours, Victorians demonstrated just how important our national teams are to the fabric of our community.
“Football is a game that transcends age, background, language and culture. It brings people together from all walks of life and creates moments of connection that are incredibly powerful, particularly during global tournaments like the FIFA World CupTM.
“The response extended far beyond football participants and supporters, reflecting the wider community’s recognition of the significance of the tournament and the role these moments play in bringing people together.
“We hope the Socceroos feel that support from back home as they compete on the other side of the world, and we look forward to seeing Victorians unite safely and respectfully once again at Fed Square to share these unforgettable moments together.”
