Victoria's Kyra Cooney-Cross seals move to Arsenal

Victorian midfielder Kyra Cooney-Cross has officially signed for Arsenal for the upcoming Barclays Women's Super League season, making the move after spending the last year with Hammarby.

Cooney-Cross makes the move to the Gunners after spending the last season and a half with Hammarby in Sweden, helping the side to their first trophy since 1995 with their Swedish Women's Cup victory earlier this year, Cooney-Cross playing 80 minutes in Hammarby's 3-0 victory over BK Häcken.

“I’m so excited to join this club,” Kyra said.

“Arsenal just felt right as soon as I heard about the interest. I’m really looking forward to experiencing the atmosphere at Emirates Stadium in front of a big crowd for our first game there this season. I can’t wait to get started and help us achieve something big together.”

Head Coach Jonas Eidevall said: “Kyra is one of the best young players in world football and we are delighted to have brought her to Arsenal. Her passing ability and explosiveness allow her to affect games in a way you rarely see from such a young player, so we firmly believe she will be an excellent addition to our midfield, now and in the future.”

Arsenal finished third in the WSL last season, 11 points behind the ladder leaders Chelsea. The Conti Cup reigning champions will kick off their WSL campaign against Liverpool, however, were unable to qualify for European football this season after their loss to Paris FC last week.

The midfielder could be in line to make her first appearance for the Gunners in their WSL opener against Liverpool on Monday the 2nd of October at 12am AEST.
