Victoria's Steph Catley leads Matildas to World Cup victory

Victoria's Steph Catley was the hero for the Matildas in their opening World Cup match, scoring the decisive penalty and standing in as captain.

The defender was named Player of the Match for her outstanding performance, scoring her fourth goal for her country and her first at a Women's World Cup.

In the aftermath of the historic victory, Catley said it was "pretty special" to score the Matildas first goal of the campaign.

"I have been practicing penalties a lot, I try to treat it just like another set piece," she explained.

"Sam (Kerr) usually takes our penalties and I am there in the wings if she needs me to take one.

"It was a lot of pressure tonight to step up and I am just glad that it went in."

Catley, who also became the second Victorian to captain the Matildas at a World Cup, said the performance was hard to put into words.

"I am very proud of the girls," she said.

"It's been such a big lead up and I think we had a lot of adrenaline and a lot of excitement coming into this game so at times I think there was moments we were working through that it was a little bit sloppy and a little bit overzealous.

"In the end, we got the result and did what we needed to do and that’s what you you’ve got to do in tournaments like this."

The Matildas next match is set to take place on Thursday, July 27 at 8:00 against Nigeria.
