Football Victoria (FV) in partnership with SSAV staged the Premier Schools Boys Cup on Friday, August 26 at Darebin International Sports Centre.
The 2022 Premier School Boys Cup which was the first held since 2019 is an opportunity for schools to go head-to-head and compete for bragging rights as the Premier Football Association and School in Victoria.
Each school participating in the competition has won their association's championship, is currently on top of their association’s ladder, or is amongst the highest finishing teams within their association's table.
Xavier College (APS) defeated Penleigh and Essendon Grammar (AGSV) 1-0 in a tightly contested game of football.
The two teams stood out all day, each winning three of their group matches and then their respective Semi-Finals to force their way into the Grand Final.
FV Participation Officer Chelsea Hooper said the day was played in high spirits.
“It was good to see teams from opposite sides of the city supporting one another, watching, and cheering on as players stood out and played well,” she said.
Regardless of the results of the games, all teams kept a positive attitude and remained ready to tackle the rest of their matches for the day.
“Teams never gave up and came out with a fighting spirit every game.”
Referees kept the ball rolling and kept play to schedule throughout the whole day with close to 20 pool matches being played before the finals.
Kardinia International College goalkeeper James Lamson was a standout, taking some sensational saves and even saving a penalty against eventual Champions Xavier College.
Students involved from all teams had a terrific experience playing at the Premier Schools Boys Cup.
Jai from Penleigh and Essendon Grammar said he was grateful to have the opportunity to participate in the day.
“It has been an amazing day as a player, being able to represent my school in a
positive way alongside some good mates of mine,” he said.
FV looks ahead to running the Premier Schools Girls Cup on Wednesday, August 31 at John Ilhan Memorial.
In this year’s installment, we also welcome School Sport Victoria (SSV) Schools to contest the Competitions for the first time.
FV has developed a strong relationship with SSV and is excited to have the teams that won the SSV Premier League in March competing in the FV and SSAV – Premier Schools Football Cups.
