League Honours: Men's National Premier Leagues
1909-1956 | 1958-1990 | 1991-2013 | 2014-2024 | Summary
While the game of British Association Football in Victoria can trace its origins to as early as 1883, league competition did not begin in earnest until 1909, when six teams played a full home-and-away round to determine an inaugural champion, Carlton United. Apart from three years during the Great War (1916-1919), the league's composition expanded, had its first Grand Finals and Playoffs to determine a champion (1920, 1923, 1928 and 1947) and endured a district split (1926-1927) before surviving the turmoil of the Second World War. A wave of migrant clubs would form post WWII, though not before the league saw its first ever regional champion in Yallourn (1951) which preceded the greatest ever club dynasty in metropolitan Melbourne, as Juventus claimed five successive championships (1952-1956).
